MY Access Training on 2/19/13

Grade 6 and 7 MY Access Action Plan for BMS – From Now to End of School Year
In attendance: Enrica, Sharon, Dianne, Jane, Kathy, Vicki, Kathleen

The Grade 6 and 7 teachers reviewed what they wanted to accomplish. These topics included:
  • Jane - Jane is feeling overwhelmed by the amount of correcting with so many students; students don't seem to know ho to take their writing to the next level
  • Vicki - Grade 6, Special Ed teacher; Has not used herself but has seen students using and is open to learning anything and everything
  • Sharon -
    • (1) use of My Prompts from your perspective - we have not explored this at all
    • (2) using the grammar work in MyAccess to support the Common Core
      (3) using MyAccess as part of a student writing portfolio
      (4) individualizing instruction using MyAccess

  • Lisa - How does MY Access align to the Common Core State Standards?
  • Kathleen - Development an Action Plan of next steps to get us through the school year
  • Dianne - Continue working on what we did last time and look at how MY Access aligns with CCSS
  • Enrica - Tying MY Access to the CCSS; refresher from earlier training sessions
  • Kathy

Below is the Action Plan of Next Steps that the teachers developed:

Kathleen, Dianne, Jane, Kathy, Sharon, Lisa, Vicki
Spring 2013
Students will have access to resources even if the cart or labs are not available to them.
Assign grade-wide writing prompt and administer it
Grade 6 Team
May/June 2013
Final writing prompt will be assigned and scored. Reports can be generated comparing beginning of year to end of year.

Resources Needed:
  1. Coordination of resources – access to technology
  2. Departmentalizing of Grade 6 Team – this would help with the access to technology since not everyone would have the need for the technology at the same time during the school day
  3. Time as an interdisciplinary team and as individuals to collaborate, explore, research the possibilities that MY Access offers to us as teachers of writing and to our students
  4. Glen’s help with submitting MY Prompts to become Pilot Prompts

Grade 5 Team
In attendance:
What are your questions about MY Access?
  • Kristen - How do I make my own prompts?
  • Robin - How much can we do with it?
  • Cris - What is it? Can we use it efficiently soon?
  • Chris - How can I use it in Art?
  • Kathi - Same as Cris and Robin
  • Diane - What kind of training and support will we get?
  • Kelly - How does the program know what good writing looks like?
We explored the MY Access Resource and Training Center, specifically looking at some the the Writer's Helpers like the Word Bank and the Student Activity Workbook. We spent some time reviewing the MY Access Writer's Guide. Then each teacher responded to the "An Empty Classroom" prompt that Jane had set up for them with her generic training accounts. They found the immediate and specific feedback to be helpful and some wanted to immediately go back into their writing and revise so they would get higher scores.

Special Ed Team
Why are you here?
Maryann - How do I assign prompts and groups?
David - Anything
Vicki - Same as Maryann
Kristen - Same as Maryann and Vicki
The Special Ed Team learned how to create groups and assignments. Then they went in as a generic student to actually respond to an assignment and see what kinds of feedback and support the students can get from MY Access.
